Starch – an important binder

Starch – or to give it its full name distarch phosphate – provides cohesion in cosmetics products. In other words, it holds individual components together. This gives it an important role in the cosmetics industry, even if it has no direct purpose in skincare. Starch is obtained from plant sources and is regarded as safe.

About starch (distarch phosphate)

  • INCI name (International Nomenclature of Cosmetic Ingredients name): Distarch Phosphate
  • Natural (e.g. maize, potatoes, wheat)
  • Special properties of starch: Prevents powder products sticking together, binding agent, stabilizer for emulsions

The strengths of starch

Starch is a binding agent. It ensures that the individual substances in cosmetics products remain cohesive. Distarch phosphate also prevents powder components from sticking together or forming lumps. This is especially important in the manufacture of cosmetic powders. In addition, starch has a low water content. This means that it is able to absorb aqueous, oil-soluble or finely distributed substances and leaves a soft and soothing effect on the skin. Care products containing starch feel silky and non-greasy to the touch.

How is starch obtained?

Distarch phosphate is obtained from a chemical reaction between natural starch and phosphorus chlorides (esterification). Natural starch can also be obtained from various plant raw materials. Maize is the main source, but other plants like wheat, potatoes and rice are also used.

The statements about properties, effects and effectiveness made here refer exclusively to the plant and its components/products.
